I started the Lineage Research Space on Quora in February in order to create a space where questions about genealogy research could be asked and discussed. Everything from how to interpret Ancestry DNA results to the origins of surnames and how to find vital records. But this concept seems to not be relatable to some people who think it’s a Space to:
Ask racist questions about tribal communities
Ask racist questions about their neighboring countries
Ask questions about disease heritability
Spread harmful stereotypes about another ethnicity or nationality
Spread celebrity gossip
I spend more time rejecting submissions than I do to actually contributing the Space. So I’m working on a better About statement for the Space, though the term “lineage research” in combination with tree branches and discussions on vital records should be self-explanatory.
Lineage research is the research into ancestry and genealogy. This is a Space to discuss research, resources, and tools that help people connect to those who came before them. From vital records to genetic genealogy and understanding how the populations our ancestors were members of came to be where they were.
So - what does lineage research mean to you? Am I missing anything in my expectations of what the Space should cover?
