The wives and children of Israel Arnold, Jr. (1678~1758)
The Arnold line is part of My Lineage from the Roots Up, vol. 1 (read for free on Kindle Unlimited). All references are available in the published book.
Israel Arnold Jr. was born January 18, 1678, presumably in Warwick, Rhode Island, to Israel Arnold and Mary (Barker) Smith Arnold. He is thought to have died August 3, 1758, in Warwick, Rhode Island. During his life, he was married three times and had at least a dozen children.
He married (1st) Elizabeth Smith (1672-1718) February 28, 1698, in Kent Co., Rhode Island. They had nine or ten children:
1. Elizabeth born January 19, 1699, in Warwick, Rhode Island. Some genealogists think she had the married name Mason, but no marriage or death records were found.
2. Israel III born July 19, 1701, in Warwick, Rhode Island. He married his cousin Mary Rhodes January 14, 1724, in Providence, Rhode Island. He died about 1743 in Rhode Island, naming five children and his wife in his will.
3. Lydia born about 1702/3 in Warwick, Rhode Island. She married Joseph Sheldon (1697-1771) January 15, 1724, in Providence, Rhode Island. They had several children, including Christopher Sheldon (1732-1799) who married Israel III’s daughter Rosanna. She died July 11, 1772, and is buried in North Burial Ground, Providence, Rhode Island.
4. Benjamin born January 18, 1707, Warwick, Rhode Island. He died April 19, 1739, and is buried in Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Warwick, Rhode Island.
5. Christopher born (as a twin) November 7, 1710, in Warwick, Rhode Island. He married Lydia Tillinghast (1714-1807) November 17, 1735, in Rhode Island. They had at least three children. He died January 6, 1791. He was moved from the Tillinghast-Arnold burying ground in 1848 to the North Burial Ground, Providence, Rhode Island.
6. Stephen born (as a twin) November 7, 1710, in Warwick. He married his twin’s sister-in-law Mercy Tillinghast around 1735/8. They had at least three children. He died July 3, 1743, and is buried in North Burial Ground, Providence, Rhode Island
7. Sion born October 31, 1713, in Warwick, Rhode Island. There does not appear to be a record of his death.
8. Mary born February 25, 1714, in Warwick, Rhode Island. Some genealogists think she had the married name Carpenter, but I have not found a marriage record. A Mary Carpenter (1716-1770) is buried in North Burial Ground, Providence, whereas no Mary Arnold record is found. Whether this is her is unclear.
9. Simon born December 25, 1717, in Warwick, Rhode Island. He married (1st) Lydia Green (1718-1758) March 1, 1738, in Warwick, Rhode Island, and had several children. He married (2nd) Hannah Chapman (1737-1821) February 26, 1758, in Scituate, Rhode Island, and had several more children, being father to more than 15 overall. He was buried in the Arnold-Pawtuxet Burial Ground, Warwick, Rhode Island.
10. If genealogist assumptions are correct: Phebe born (potentially a twin) December 25, 1717, in Warwick, but no birth record was found and she is not listed with her siblings in the Warwick town records. She is thought to have married John Potter (b. 1718, Rhode Island, to John and Phebe Potter).
Israel Jr., married (2nd) Dorothy (Whipple) Rhodes (d. 1723), widow of Malachi Rhodes, December 24, 1719, in Warwick, Rhode Island. They had two children:
1. Rebecca born December 5, 1720, in Warwick, Rhode Island. It is not clear if she married, or the circumstances of her death. (She is not the Rebecca Arnold who married Joseph Stafford in 1739. According to the Marriage Records, that Rebecca’s father was Capt. William Arnold.)
2. Joseph born November 14, 1721, in Warwick, Rhode Island. It is not clear if he married, or the circumstances of his death.
Isreal Jr., married (3rd) Elizabeth (Stafford) Case (d. 1756), widow of William Case, June 27, 1730, in Warwick, Rhode Island. They had one child:
1. Bathsheba born October 2, 1732, in Warwick, Rhode Island. She married Uriah Davis May 24, 1752, in Warwick. Any other records for her are unclear.
