The family of Jacob Hale (1850-1913) of Floyd Co., Kentucky
I’ve written previously about Cynthia Hale’s children with Silas England, but not about any of the other Hales. Jacob Hale is my 2nd great-grandfather through my paternal grandmother. Cynthia was his daughter. And now it’s his turn.
Jacob “Jake” Hale was born about 1850 in Kentucky to James Hale and Janie (Sanders) Hale. He was the youngest of nine known children. His eight siblings were:
1. Sarah “Sallie” (~1828 - aft. 1880), she married William Rose (~1816~1858) August 24, 1852, and had a daughter with Frank Baldridge in 1865.
2. Susannah “Susan” (~1831~1886), she married Shelby Wallen (1832-1885) about 1851.
3. James Nelson (~1832/4-1901; Union soldier), he married Margaret Howard (b.~1830) in 1852.
4. Katharine (1836-1907), she married Abraham Miller (1831-1910) about 1853.
5. Eleanor “Nellie” (1840-1918), she had a number of children by Tandy Hamilton (b.~1836) prior to her (1st) marriage to William Calhoun (b. ~1840) in 1882.
6. John (b. ~1841).
7. William (b. ~1843).
8. Elizabeth Jane “Janey” (~1847-1925), she married Bryson Shepard (1853-1920) about 1880.
Jacob’s father James Hale was born about 1804 in Virginia. He married Janie Sanders (1808-1877) February 13, 1826, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. A John Hale, potentially his brother or an uncle, attested for him on the marriage license, Janie’s father Jacob Sanders for her. James died by 1880.
In 1870, Jacob married (1st) Maryann “Polly” Miller (1853~1907), who appears to have been a servant in the home of another Hale in Floyd Co., Kentucky (it isn’t one of Jacob’s siblings, so possibly an uncle - Samuel Hale).
They had several children:
1. Jane born about 1873 in Kentucky. She was no longer living with the family by 1900.
2. Lydia Margaret born February 18, 1874, in Magoffin Co., Kentucky. She was no longer living with the family by 1900.
3. Wesley born August 11, 1876, in Goodloe, Floyd Co., Kentucky. He married Sarah Kennedy (1873-1943) about 1897, though their oldest child was born earlier that decade. They had several children. He died February 17, 1952, and is buried next to his wife in Hale Cemetery #1, Floyd Co., Kentucky.
4. Abraham born October 1, 1878, in Magoffin Co., Kentucky. He married (2nd) Caledonia “Dony/Donna” (Maynard) Hale (1876-1953, widow of Thomas Hale) September 5, 1903, in Martin Co., Kentucky, and had several children. She had at least three children from her previous marriage. He died before 1930, when his widow and youngest children were living in West Virginia.
5. James Nelson born October 15, 1880, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. He married Mahaley “Hala” Kennedy (1882-1923) about 1902 in Kentucky. They had several children. He died January 8, 1928, and is buried next to his wife in Kennedy Cemetery, Floyd Co., Kentucky.
6. Caroline “Callie” born December 1882 in Floyd Co., Kentucky. She married Green Bradley (~1872-1952) about 1902, presumably in Floyd Co., Kentucky, and had several children. She died May 20, 1951, in Limestone Township, Alger, Michigan.
7. Andrew “Tandy” born January 23, 1884, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. He married America “Markie” Bailey (~1890-1931) February 14, 1910, in Magoffin Co., Kentucky, and had several children in Kentucky. In 1930, the family lived in Ohio where his younger brother Jacob was institutionalized and Tandy worked as a farm laborer, though his wife died and was buried in Kentucky in 1931. He then worked for Michigan Central Railroad in 1942, living in Chelsea where his son Homer had relocated. Tandy died August 29, 1971, in Floyd Co., Kentucky.
8. Cynthia born February 16, 1887, in Kentucky. She married Silas England (1888-1973) about 1908 in Kentucky and had several children. She died June 19, 1955, in Kosciusko Co., Indiana, and was buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake, Indiana, as Cynthia Hale England.
9. Benjamin born December 5, 1888, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. He married Eliza Miller (b. ~1893) about 1909. He died of tuberculosis June 17, 1911, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. It appears that their first and only child died soon thereafter from a similar infection.
10. Jacob “Jake” born February 1891 in Kentucky. He married Margaret Conley (1889-1931) about 1916 and had at least five children. The youngest two were born in Ohio, where the family had relocated after 1921, but all five ended up in a Children’s Home in Delaware, Ohio. Jake was institutionalized in Columbus State Hospital for the Insane due to schizophrenia symptoms in 1927, where he lived until his death from heart disease January 3, 1946. He is buried in Grove Cemetery, Kenton, Ohio.
11. William Mansfield born March 23, 1892, in Middle Creek, Kentucky. He was a miner in West Virginia by 1918. He married after 1920 but was divorced by 1940. He died November 5, 1952. Alice Hale signed his military headstone request, but whether this is his ex-wife or daughter is unclear. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Williamson, West Virginia.
12. Green born July 7, 1897, in Kentucky. He married Lillie Prater (1895-1977) December 1, 1917, in Magoffin Co., Kentucky, and had several children. He died August 28, 1958, in Hueysville, Kentucky.
Jacob married (2nd) Cyntha Brown (b. ~1861) about 1908. She had a 10-year-old daughter from a previous relationship but claimed no previous marriage, though she claimed having had five children, none of whom appear to have been a Hale.
Jacob died March 8, 1913, and is buried in Langley Cemetery, Floyd Co., Kentucky.
