The children of the 'Mayor of Guildford', Nicholas Babbs
This family is a short branch in my family tree in My Lineage from the Roots Up, vol. 1. All of the references are available in the footnotes of that volume.
Nicholas Babbs (Jr.) was born presumably before 1515, though some sources presume it was as late as 1525, to Nicholas Babbs (b. ~1495) of Guildford, Co. Surrey, England. He is often referred to as Mayor of Guildford and is said to have also served as Bailiff. He is thought to have married Helen Parkhurst (b. ~1516), daughter of George Parkhurst, Mayor of Guildford (~1485-1545/6), by about 1542. Helen’s brother is thought to have been John Parkhurst, Bishop of Norwich (1512-1575).
There are baptism records for the following children:
1. Henry baptized August 18, 1543, at St. Mary, Guildford, Co. Surrey, England. He may have been the Henry Babbin who married Bridget Foster August 31, 1572, at St. Mary, Guildford, though some say he died young.
2. Margaret baptized February 27, 1545, at St. Mary, Guildford, Co. Surrey, England. She may have married Richard Crampton.
3. Helen (sometimes given as Ellin Bab) baptized September 15, 1546, St. Mary, Guildford, Co. Surrey, England She married Robert Peck (1546-1593), presumably about 1572 in Beccles, Co. Suffolk, England, and had several children. She was buried at St. Michael’s Churchyard, Beccles, Co. Suffolk, October 31, 1614, as “Ellenor Pecke, widow”.
4. Nicholas baptized November 9, 1549, at St. Mary, Guildford, Co. Surrey, England.
5. Edward baptized February 16, 1550, at St. Mary, Guildford, Co. Surrey, England.
Nicholas died October 4, 1550, in Co. Surrey, England. It appears his wife married (2nd) Thomas Backingham (d. 1578) April 18, 1551, at Guildford, Co. Surrey, and possibly had more children before her presumed death about 1574.
