James O’Neil (or O’Neill, Oneal) was born December 31, 1776, in Ireland to Henry O’Neil and Nancy Lee. Ruth Donaldson was born in 1794 in Scotland. There is a passenger record for a James Oneil for 1791, arriving via Berks, Pennsylvania, but not for his parents or siblings who are thought to have traveled with him.

James and Ruth were married in Hocking Co., Ohio, prior to 1815 (reportedly the first marriage in Starr, Ohio). They had at least seven children:
