A Short Corfield Line from 18th Century Shropshire
When I was writing the 1st volume of My Lineage from the Roots Up, I ran into a lot of short lines - lineages where I found the parents and/or grandparents of someone who married into the main line (i.e., my x-great-grandmother or x-great-grandfather) but nothing else. One of these lines had the surname Corfield.
Using information from marriage records, parish records, and birth/christening records in databases of these vital records on Ancestry, I developed the following lineage for this part of my tree.
William Corfield married Elizabeth Geers in 1730 in Meole Brace, Shropshire, England. Records suggest they had at least a few children:
1. George born about 1740 (see below).
2. William who married Elizabeth Roles February 2, 1760, at Upton-Magna, Shropshire.
3. Thomas baptized June 22, 1745, Much Wenlock, Shropshire.
George Corfield was baptized November 5, 1740, at Much Wenlock, Shropshire, England. He apparently married Martha Himmer at Little Wenlock, Shropshire, in February 1760. Himmer may possibly be a misspelling of Hamer, which then she may be the daughter of George and Martha Hamer, baptized February 1744, Clun, Shropshire. There are baptism records for two children of George and Martha Corfield:
1. Hannah born in 1763 in Shropshire (see below).
2. Ann born in 1765 in Shropshire. She appears to have married John Bourne in Dawley-Magna, Shropshire, in 1790.
There are two burial records that could be Martha – one for 1798 in the general Shropshire parish records and one for 1824 in Little Wenlock, Shropshire. Or this could indicate another daughter or the wife of a son passing at the later date. The details of George’s death are unclear.
Hannah Corfield was baptized February 9, 1763, in Shropshire. She married Thomas Bickerton in 1783 and had at least one child, who I have written on previously.
The details of Hannah (Corfield) Bickerton’s death are unclear.
