Zilpha (or Zilphia, Zelpha) Adams was born August 1, 1810/1, in Kentucky to Stephen Adams and Mary Mollie (Webb) Adams. She was the 6th of 8 known children and the 4th born after the family relocated to Kentucky from North Carolina. Zilpha is said to have died in 1893 and is listed next to her first husband on his headstone in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Prestonsburg, Kentucky, as Zalpha Adams Holbrook, but does not appear to be buried there.
She married (1st) Randolph Holbrook, Jr (1811-1840) by 1828 and had six children:
1. Nancy Ann Holbrook born December 23, 1828 or 1830, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. (Her death certificate does not agree with the census records. She was likely born in 1830, which better matches her brother’s birth date, making Kelsey older than her, instead of younger.) She married Richard Lee Spradlin (~1824~1868) by 1849. She died December 14, 1912, and was buried in Machpelah Cemetery, Mount Sterling, Kentucky.
2. Kelsey Holbrook born April 1829. He married Ruth Mullins (1829-1896) September 5, 1851. He was living alone in Floyd Co., Kentucky, in 1900. His estate was probated in 1902, and he was buried in the family plot, Kelsey Holbrook Cemetery, in Floyd Co., Kentucky.
3. Benjamin May Holbrook born March 26, 1832,in Floyd Co., Kentucky. He married Rhoda Bays Spradlin (1834-1919) March 16, 1850, in Morgan Co., Kentucky. He was a Baptist minister in Middle Creek and served as Postmaster of Gapville in Magoffin Co., Kentucky, 1888-1893. Rev. Benjamin Holbrook died July 12, 1897, and is buried in Benjamin Holbrook Cemetery, Prestonsburg, Kentucky.
4. Randolph “Randall” Holbrook born about 1834. He was a farmhand beside his brother Kelsey at Hiram Patrick’s farm in 1850. He married Mary Hamilton (b. ~1837) April 8, 1855, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. They were both still living in 1880.
5. Mary Holbrook born about 1836. She appears to have married James Stone (b.~1832) by 1855. She died after 1880.
6. Elizabeth Holbrook born May 19, 1839, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. She married (1st) Randolph Hargis Holbrook (1838-1878) before 1860. She married (2nd) James Faris (b. ~1830, d. before 1910) October 3, 1887, in Magoffin Co., Kentucky. She was living with her son Benjamin Holbrook in Elliotville in 1910 and her daughter Zilpha Elam in Elliotville, Breathitt Co., Kentucky, in 1920. She died October 23, 1924, and is buried in Hunting Creek Cemetery (“Holbrook Cemetery”), in Bays, Breathitt Co., Kentucky, as Elizabeth Holbrook.
Zilpha married (2nd) Charles Stone (~1820-1894) June 6, 1844, in Floyd Co., Kentucky.
They had at least five more children (8 and 9 may be the same person):
7. Stephen Stone born in 1848 in Kentucky. He married (1st) Mary Crace (b. ~1851) March 14, 1866, in Magoffin Co., Kentucky. He married (2nd) Jane Risner (1860-1946) July 14, 1876, in Magoffin Co., Kentucky. He died in 1898.
8. Margaret Stone born in 1850. She was 3 months old when the 1850 census was taken and does not appear in the 1860 census.
9. Serilda Stone born June 10, presumably in 1851 based on the age of 9 years given on the 1860 census. She may be the same daughter given as Margaret on the 1850 census (see above), as her year of birth is commonly given as 1849. She married Henry Crace (1850~1900) by 1868 and had several children. She was already listed as widowed on the 1900 census though her husband is often attributed to the Henry Crace who died in 1911 as a widower. She died May 31, 1937, and is buried in Crace Cemetery, Ivyton, Kentucky, as Rilda Francis Crace.
10. Rebecca Martha Stone born September 9, 1852, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. She married Anthony Hackworth (~1855-1937) in 1871. She was living with her son Harvey in 1940 just before she died. She is said to be buried in Thomas Hackworth Cemetery, Ivyton, Kentucky.
11. George Stone born March 26, 1855, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. He married (1st) Manda Marshall (~1860~1884) May 1, 1875, in Magoffin Co., Kentucky. He married (2nd) Nancy Fletcher (b. ~1870, d. before 1930) April 1, 1886, in Magoffin Co., Kentucky. He died April 22, 1940, in Floyd Co., Kentucky.
12. Sarah born June 22, 1859, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. She married Wesley Prater (1855-1924) August 28, 1877, in Floyd Co., Kentucky. She died April 14, 1885, and is buried in Adams Family Cemetery, Brainard, Kentucky.
