The children of William Durkee (1632-1712) and Martha Cross (1643-1727)
The marriage of William Durkee and Martha Cross was forbidden, but they married in Ipswich, Massachusetts, against her father’s wishes on December 20, 1664. They had at least nine children over 20 years.
In Ireland, William’s family spelled their surname O’Durge. As the family spread in America, some chose to keep Durge or Durgee, others adapted it to Durkee (from Durke) to move away from their Catholic past. I explore this line in My Lineage from the Roots Up, vol. 1, where you can find full references (free to read on Kindle Unlimited).
