I’ve written before about my paternal grandparents, though mostly my grandmother because my grandfather died in 1978 and I never knew him.

My mother has told me about how she was supposed to be getting ready for her nephew’s wedding in New York when they got the call my grandfather had passed and she ended up going with Dad to Indiana for the funeral instead of attending the wedding - he was on leave from the Navy for the trip.

Alfred Prater had a heart attack while watching wrestling on TV with his grandson on his knee. He was 64. Alfred and Alice had been married 43 years.

I have a lot of cousins out there - Grandma and Grandpa Prater had 10 children who survived to adulthood, and there are now 3-5 generations beyond for some of them (e.g., at least one of their daughter Flora Jean’s grandkids has grandkids). So in this month’s behind the paywall, I’m going to provide the documentation I have for my paternal grandparents Alfred and Alice Prater.
