Children of Norwich Founder William Backus (1634-1721)
William Backus (or Backhouse) was baptized at Saint Peter in Sheffield, York, England November 30, 1634. His father was also named William Backus. THe younger William arrived in Saybrook, Connecticut, with his father and brother Stephen in 1637. He held many positions in the Norwich “train band” and is listed on the Founders’ Monument, having taken part in buying the land that would become Norwich from Uncas (on behalf of the Mohegans).
He married twice and had nine children as outlined below before dying in 1721. The location of his burial is unknown.
